Workshops and Exhibitions

In October, our lab will participate in the IEEE VIS 2023 conference in Melbourne, Australia. Kicking things off, Uzma Haque Syeda helped organize the Visualization for Social Good workshop, with Michelle Borkin on the steering committee. Jane Adams will be presenting her work DevOps for DataVis: a survey and provocation for teaching deployment of data visualizations at alt.VIS, where she and Michael Correll are on the steering committee. Racquel Fygenson is co-organizing the VISxVISION workshop. Jane and Racquel will also be presenting artwork, Eco-Mending and Latent Prism, at the VIS Arts Program.

Papers and Posters

Jane, Laura South, Michelle et al. will be presenting their work Augmented Reality for Scholarly Publication of 3D Visualizations in Astronomy: An Empirical Evaluation. Lace Padilla et al. contributed Average Estimates in Line Graphs are Biased Towards Areas of Higher Variability, for which they received a best paper honorable mention. David Saffo, Sara Bi Bartolomeo, Tarik Crnovrsanin, Laura, Justin Raynor, Caglar Yildirim, and Cody Dunne will be presenting Unraveling the Design Space of Immersive Analytics: A Systematic Review. Melanie Tory and Michael contributed to Heuristics for Supporting Cooperative Dashboard Design. Liudas Panavas, Tarik, Jane, Melanie, Cody et al. will be presenting Investigating the Visual Utility of Differentially Private Scatterplots.

Racquel, Lace, and Enrico Bertini submitted The arrangement of marks impacts afforded messages: ordering, partitioning, spacing, and coloring in bar charts. Enrico also contributed to SUBPLEX: A Visual Analytics Approach to Understand Local Model Explanations at the Subpopulation Level and Visual Exploration of Machine Learning Model Behavior with Hierarchical Surrogate Rule Sets. Tarik, Sara, Connor Wilson, and Cody will be presenting Indy Survey Tool: A Framework to Unearth Correlations in Survey Data. Michael contributed to Fitting Bell Curves to Data Distributions Using Visualization. Melanie et al. will be presenting Finding Their Data Voice: Practices and Challenges of Dashboard Users. Justin and Melanie also contributed to Embracing Disciplinary Diversity in Visualization. Lace contributed to Image or Information? Examining the Nature and Impact of Visualization Perceptual Classification.
